Outdoor and philosophy

Seminars

Hans Bolten and Jac Rongen regularly lead seminars in self reflection, in which outdoor activities and philosophy are combined. The program offers you the possibility to examine your way of thinking in interaction with others in a small group.

Programme outline

In this program we aim to:

  • examine the events that took place   what happened exactly
  • catch the thoughts behind the words   we say the same things, but do we mean the same
  • move away from personal judgements   where is the limit of my being right
  • experience shifts in perspective   do I know what my perspective is
  • sharpen concepts   what do I exactly think
  • look at new insights   do I actually do what I think?

Questions

We begin the workshop with the following questions or themes:

  • can I look at myself
  • can I move others
  • do I make a difference?

Outdoor and philosophy

The combination of outdoor activities and socratic dialogue offers the possibility to immediately evaluate new insights in action. The outdoor sessions provide throughout the programme further food for thought, and lead to fast developments during the indoor sessions. We usually start with an outdoor session of about two hours, followed by an indoor session of the same length. Indoor and outdoor sessions alternate for the whole seminar.

The outdoor program is designed to adjust to what goes on in the group, so that the group moves in a way that provides enough material to talk about.
We know from our experience that the processes that develop in the outdoors, are mirrored in the socratic dialogue. This facilitates an immediate analysis of what makes the participants think.
The aim of the chosen approach is to sharpen participants’ thought process, and make it more congruent.
