There are several terms in use for developmental outdoor activities. Very often they are used interchangeably, which can be confusing. Therefor here we first explain what we mean by the terms outdoor, outward bound en survival.

The word Outdoor means that activities take place in the open air. Many programs under this name take between 1 and 3 days in the Netherlands. The participants are presented with activities that, in general, are aimed at eliciting a limited amount of fear and anxiety. The physical activities are strongly aimed at
-- the theory that is to be transferred in the training
-- the topics that client and participants want to be discussed.

Outward bound® is a protected name that is often misused to label programs that are more physically demanding for the participants. Usually this type of program is more aimed at giving people the opportunity of breaking through their boundaries. Programs of this kind usually take some more time.

Survival is the most extreme form of outdoor activities. In some programs the participants go into the bush, with the task of reporting themselves at a point 100 kilometer away within x days. They are equipped with not much more than a piece of plastic, fire and a compass.

Within the above division, Rongen Consult concentrates itself on outdoor activities. The learning environment can be adjusted and controlled by the trainer. Thus, with a minimum of risk, we can work with a group on the developmental goals that our programs are usually aimed at.
